Grace Livingston Hill Lutz was an early 20th century Christian Romance novelist. She is credited with having written hundreds of short stories and novels. Her strong female characters were either solid Christian women or women who became Christian during the course of the story. Hill's message was always the same good verses evil. Set in New York state in the twentieth century, this religious love story has elements of mystery. The City of Fire begins, "Billy Gaston, two miles away and a few degrees up the mountain side, standing on the little station platform at Pleasant View, waiting for the morning train looked down upon the beauty at his feet and felt its loveliness blindly. A passing thrill of wonder and devotion fled through his fourteen-year-old soul as he regarded it idly. Down there was home and all his interests and loyalty. His eyes dwelt affectionately on the pointing spire and bell tower. He loved those bells, and the one who played them, and under their swelling tones had been awakened new thoughts and lofty purposes. He knew they were lofty. He was not yet altogether sure that they were his, but they were there in his mind for him to think about, and there was a strange awesome lure about their contemplation." This book is recommended for high school and adult readers.

CITY OF FIRE is a different kind of novel. Much of the story is about Billy Gaston, a boy on the brink of manhood. Billy is basically good, but he gets mixed up with some kidnappers and works hard to make everything come out right.

Billy's two favorite people are Marilyn (Lynn) Severn, the minister's daughter, and Mark Carter. They were childhood friends who fell in love, but, when Mark hears someone say he isn't good enough for her, he turns cold to her and goes off to prove them right. Marilyn accepts all this without an explanation and stoically goes on with her life of playing the organ and helping others. I thought this was a weak link in the plot.

I found the characters very interesting, even Laurie Shafton, the rich, spoiled, lady's man, who had never been told "no," until Marilyn. The plot had some parts that didn't seem quite believable, like when the doctor at a hospital impulsively left his job and took all day to drive Billy home. I still found the story intereresting. I even thought the archaic slang some reviewers mentioned to be chaming and add to the early 20th century feel of the book. Some of the dialect (I guess it was supposed to be New York state) was a little difficult and didn't ring true to me, but, in the end, I was glad I read the novel.

Sometimes we are told "You may be the only Bible a person ever reads". They are going by what they see in our lives as a witness to the saving grace of God. The City of Fire by Grace Livingston Hill is another testimony that God's forgiveness is for everyone.
I love all of Grace Livingston Hill’s books. I hadn’t read this book for many years and I’m always so touched by the way she weaves the Gospel message into the thread of exciting adventures.
This is a story of a young man, becoming a Christian, and the woman he married.
And a boy becoming a Christian man, and all their adventures, and trials soon the way.
All the time I was growing up, I spent many hours reading stacks of books that I had brought home from the library, Grace Livingston Hill books were read many times so I decided to read them as an older woman to see if they had the same charm of souls coming to Christ. They do.
My wife had read this book and had really enjoyed it. I was looking for something to read and she suggested that I may enjoy it. Wow ! She was so right. This was written about a century ago, but it has so much detail about the time it was written that it could have been written during our current generation and you can see GOD working in people's lives the same way HE currently works in our lives to to bring us to Him.
Men read this book, you will enjoy it as I did. We serve an awesome SAVIOUR !!
i am now reading the city of fire and i have to tell you that after reading the earlier revewsi was expecting a very boring and uninteresting book ,but i have to say that this book is great.the way she describes scenes are wonderful and the way she puts little gems of scripture in the story just adds more to the story.the characters are so believable and the moral fiber of the book makes it a great read.so dont always believe every reveiw that you read because you just might miss a great book
This is about a young man who, upon overhearing that he's not considered good enough for the girl he loves, sets out to prove them right and then has to deal with the guilt and shame. In a time when there is very little shame anymore, it's hard to relate to the torture the people in this story put themselves through. Much of the story is told through the eyes of a young boy who observes, and is involved in, many of the twists and turns the story takes, from a kidnapping, to jealousy, to thwarting villains, to surviving being shot, to surviving a tenement fire, to a murder trial - it all happens in this story. Throughout, all the characters come face to face with faith, God, forgiveness, and grace. I like these books, even though they tend to be schmalzy and very old fashioned and sometimes even not particularly well written, but they're charming all the same and always contain some uplifting truth about Christ.
